Exciting times in Derby

Derby is a modern city set in a stunning rural environment. The majority of our residential areas are 15 minutes from the bustling centre or 15 minutes from fantastic parks and open spaces, including the Peak District and the National Forest.

Living in and around Derby is affordable too with competitive prices and tremendous choice ranging from modern riverside apartments to countryside cottages. Derby has top schools, a top five further education college and a growing modern university which is gaining a reputation for the quality of its student experience.

Derby is the safest city in the region but that's not all we can shout about. Our healthcare and councils are among the best in the country.


You'll find plenty of shopping opportunities in the city, from individual shops and designer boutiques along the cobbled streets of the Cathedral Quarter, to big names like Primark on our high street and in Westfield shopping centre more than one million square feet of shopping heaven with over 190 shops and Eat Central with 800 seats and mouth watering tastes from around the world. You can take also enjoy a break from shopping by visiting the luxury 12-screen cinema.

Going out

In the city centre there's a good range of bars for all music tastes, and plenty of live music venues. There's a good variety of places to eat with different types of food on offer, including:

  • Chinese

  • Japanese and

  • Thai

There are well known names like
Pizza Express, Nando's and Zizzi as well as ones unique to Derby. Of course there are also lots of take away places

The QUAD is a new arts centre for showcasing visual arts, film and media.

If you enjoy performing arts and street entertainment, Derby Feste is an event you won't want to miss. It's an annual three day event showcasing spectacular outdoor performances from around the world

Sports and activities

If sport is your thing, there’s a lot going on in Derby.

Pride Park Stadium is the home of Derby County football team, and Derby's the hub for the Sustrans national cycle route. Or, if you're into walking, climbing, or more adventurous sports, there are miles of countryside right on your doorstep in Derbyshire and the Peak District.

Accessible - a central city

Derby is an attractive, compact and accessible city with an enviable quality of life. Home to 250,000 people and a hinterland of 1,500,000, Derby's central location means 6 million people can access the city in less than an hour. Its excellent road links via the M1 and M6 means that 80% of the population are within a two hour drive - great for visiting friends, family, customers and suppliers.

Derby is a famous rail centre with 31 fast daily services to London St Pancras International. Direct rail services connect Derby with Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Dundee, Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Sheffield, Southampton, Plymouth and many other destinations.

Both East Midlands and Birmingham International Airport are 15 and 45 minutes from the city respectively, providing extensive air links to most European and worldwide destinations.
