3.3 Cromoglicate, leukotriene, anatagonists therapies

3.3.2    Leukotriene receptor antagonists

Montelukast (Respiratory physicians initiated only).


1. Montelukast is indicated for add on therapy in mild to moderate asthma which is not adequately controlled with an inhaled corticosteroid and a short acting beta-2-stimulant used as required. It may also be used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.

2. Prescribers should be alert to the development of eosinophilia, vasculitic rashes, worsening pulmonary symptoms and the development of cardiac symptoms or peripheral neuropathy which may indicate the Churg-Strauss syndrome, a potentially serious side effect of leukotriene antagonists.
