Microbiology Department New Opening Hours

The Microbiology department has changed its opening hours. From Monday 16th April we are now open from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday with no change to the weekend opening of 8.30 am to 12.30 pm. We will aim to process many samples during this time however if your request is urgent please telephone the lab to make them aware of your request. All urgent results will be telephoned when requested or if there is a clinically significant result (including blood cultures). From 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm these will be telephoned by the BMS on shift who will contact the requesting ward and not the medical team. Consultant Microbiologist advice is available via switchboard during this time. Out of hours (on-call 8:00 pm - 8:00 am) - The Microbiology on-call staff do not work on-site and MUST be contacted for urgent tests/samples via switchboard.

HbA1c Units

The dual reporting of HbA1c in both %(DCCT) and mmol/mol (IFCC traceable) units will cease from 10th July 2017 in line with national guidance. From this date HbA1c results will be reported in mmol/mol only.  A conversion table is available below.

New Folate Ranges

Our Chemistry department has recently received a newly formulated folate assay. The new assay is measurable to a national traceable standard to allow more accurate comparison to other manufacturers. Results that are below 15ng/L may be up to 20% lower than previously reported. For more information, click here.

New Coagulation Reference Ranges

Recent updates in our coagulation methodology will mean as of 30/09/15, there will be small changes to some specialist coagulation test result reference ranges. All updates will be reflected in your result reporting systems.

Zero Tolerance








From 3rd March 2014, Pathology will be enforcing a zero tolerance policy on sample labelling to minimize risk and improve patient safety.
