Patient Experience Champions

Patient Experience Champions

Over the past year the Patient Experience Team’s vision has been to recruit a Patient Experience Champion for every ward and outpatient area across Derby Teaching Hospitals. To date we have achieved in recruiting 220 Patient Experience Champions!

In order to do this we asked our staff were they:

  • Passionate about patient experience?  
  • Did they want to make a real difference to patients, their families and their carers? 
  • Did they have ideas to improve patient experience? 


We see our champions as being there for our patients, their families and/or their carers to promote patient experience be it in the form of raising awareness of our ‘Making Your Moment Matter’ (MYMM) Pledges, Friends and Family Test (FFT) or just by listening and taking ideas forward to improve their patient experience.  Our champions would also be expected to constantly be encouraging a positive and caring patient experience; always putting patients at the heart of everything we do, nurturing the culture of compassion, respect and kindness towards our patients. 

It’s not just the simple things that we want our Patient Experience Champions to do; anyone can smile and make eye contact.  It is actually listening to our patients, families and carers and not just with the intent to reply, but understanding and making that important connection with the patient, their families and carers to make them feel they are a person and not just a patient or a ‘number in a bed’.
