Derby’s top nurse named NHS Quality Champion of the Year

11 December 2012

The chief nurse who oversaw a reorganisation of nursing at Derby Hospitals has been named NHS Quality Champion of the Year for the work she did in the city’s two hospitals.

Brigid Stacey, who left Derby last month to become Director of Nursing for the Shropshire and Staffordshire Local Area Team, has been named Quality Champion of the Year at the NHS Leadership Recognition Awards ceremony held in London.

“We are very proud of the work Brigid has done here in Derby to reorganise nursing, putting more nurses on our wards to deliver high quality care for our patients. Brigid engaged all our nursing staff in the whole programme which has been a huge success and we’re very proud of the national recognition she has now received” said Sue James, Chief Executive of Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Before she left the Royal Derby Hospital, Brigid said she wanted to leave a legacy of strong, visible professional leadership from the nurses themselves. Her passion, and determination to lead by example, putting quality at the heart of patient care, was embraced by nursing staff across both Derby Hospitals.

The improvements Brigid made have allowed matrons to monitor their wards more effectively and nursing teams across the Trust have been actively encouraged to improve patient care. Brigid also introduced a ‘Board to Ward’ programme which has seen executive board directors making regular ward visits.

Organised by the NHS Leadership Academy, the national awards recognise and celebrate outstanding leadership practice in health, and shine a spotlight on those who have made a significant impact in improving the quality of care for patients.

The winners were all nominated by their peers and were put through a rigorous three stage judging process. The judging panel was chaired by NHS Medical Director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh and included distinguished leaders across healthcare including Katherine Murphy, Chief Executive at the Patients’ Association, and General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, Dr Peter Carter OBE.
