Trust named apprentice employer of the year

Published 14/06/2018

Derby Teaching Hospitals is celebrating being named the top employer of apprentices in the area.

Around 210 apprentices are currently enrolled on apprenticeship programmes across the Trust in a variety of different clinical and non-clinical roles.

A total of 2.5% of the current workforce is actually made up of staff completing apprenticeships, with this figure already topping the national requirement for public sector organisations to reach 2.3% by 2020.

This commitment to developing the next generation of skilled medical professionals was acknowledged at last night’s Derby Telegraph Business Awards, as the Trust was named Apprentice Employer of the Year.

Derby Teaching Hospitals Director of Workforce, Dr Neil Pease, said: “As a Trust, we take great pride in our record for training quality apprentices, in a range of different clinical and non-clinical roles. Apprenticeships offer an alternative route into a career for people of all ages and it is great to see so many people choosing Derby Teaching Hospitals as the place to begin that journey. Our Apprenticeship and Vocational Development team play a huge role in helping us recruit and develop our staff and we are absolutely delighted to see this work recognised with the Apprenticeship Employer of the Year award.”

The Trust’s Apprenticeship and Vocational Development team is dedicated to implementing and delivering apprenticeships and last year helped 58 apprentices complete their qualifications while working across the Royal Derby Hospital and London Road Community Hospital.

Apprenticeship and Vocational Development Manager, Faye Leatt, said: “We are so proud to have received such fantastic recognition for our work developing our future workforce. The programme is all about growing our own members of staff to help make the Trust the best that it can be for the people of Derby. This award really is a Trustwide achievement, with people from every department playing a role in advancing the skills of our trainees.”
