Public invited to find out more about hospital merger plans

Published 26/09/2017

Patients and the public are invited to attend two public meetings in October looking at the proposed merger of Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, 24 October, between 6pm-7.30pm, at the Royal Derby Hospital's Medical Education Centre.

A second meeting will then take place in Burton on Thursday, 26 October, from 6pm-7.30pm, at the Queen's Hospital's Medical Education Centre.

The meetings are being held in order to explain the benefits of the proposed merger to patients and staff, while also hearing local people’s views.

The proposed merger would help to retain a vibrant district general hospital in Burton, secure specialist services in Derby for a wider population and ensure appropriate and relevant use of our community hospitals facilities.

John Rivers, Chair of Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We want to encourage as many people as possible to attend these meetings so we can answer any questions, dispel any myths and reassure members of the public about any specific concerns they may have.

“The proposed merger is an exciting opportunity to improve and enhance local services. For Derby Hospitals, the proposed collaboration means access to a wider population base, enabling us to sustain and extend specialist services, such as cancer surgery and spinal services, with clear benefits to local people across Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

"For Queen’s Hospital in Burton, our fundamental principle is that we will retain a vibrant district general hospital in the town, keeping and improving the core services we offer as part of that, including our A&E.

“In Lichfield and Tamworth, there will be an opportunity for our community hospitals facilities to offer some different services that are more relevant locally.

“Patients are at the heart of everything we do and these public meetings are an opportunity for us to share information and to listen to people’s views and concerns. We hope that many local people will attend and give us their views.”
