Shooting star Rachel claims double medal haul at world championships

A Royal Derby doctor has taken a break from saving lives to prove that she is among the sharpest shooters on the planet.

Dr Rachel Parish starred in the Double Trap at the World Shotgun Championships in Moscow to return home with two medals.

Rachel, who is a Senior Registrar in Emergency Medicine, claimed a team silver and individual bronze to cement her position as one of the best in the sport, although she admitted to feeling a sense of what might have been.

She said: “I’m really pleased to have come home with two medals but I’m also a little bit disappointed that I couldn’t get a different colour in the individual event as I was just one shot off claiming silver. It was a real privilege to represent my country, which was an awesome feeling. It was an amazing experience and ranking third in the world isn’t too bad, I suppose! “

Rachel rejoined Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in February, having previously spent two separate spells working at the Trust in 2012 and 2014.

She now plans to change discipline by switching sport to Olympic Trap and has thanked her colleagues for helping her pursue her dream of one day competing at the Olympics.

She said: “Everyone at the Trust has been incredibly supportive in allowing me to balance work with shooting. It’ll be difficult for me to change disciplines but I have done it before and I think I can do it again. I’ve managed to balance being a doctor with competing so far, so I think I have definitely got it in me. I would love to go the Olympics as it’s the ultimate in sport, so that is the dream. I’m not over the hill just yet!”

Rachel also claimed gold medals in both the individual and Double Trap Mixed events at last year’s European Shooting Championships.

Competitors in the Double Trap are given two shots to break two clay disks fired through the air, while in Olympic Trap the distance to the targets and the speed with which they are thrown are both greater.
