Award nomination for work to improve patient experience

Published 23/01/2017

A scheme introduced with the aim of helping patients have a better experience in hospital has been shortlisted for a national award.

Making Your Moment Matter was introduced by Derby Teaching Hospitals to promote the caring values staff uphold when looking after patients and their families.

The initiative, run by the Patient Experience team, has now been named as a finalist in the Patient Experience Network Awards, which celebrates work to improve the experience of patients when they come into hospital.

Paul Brooks, Associate Director of Patient Experience, said: “Being unwell and coming into hospital is never a nice experience, but Making Your Moment Matter is about doing what we can to make sure it is as positive as possible. It’s made a real impact on our patients since it was introduced, and it’s great to be recognised for that.”

Making Your Moment Matter is based on five pledges, which were created following consultation with staff and patients about the things which were most important to them.

These are:

  • We will treat you as a person, not just a patient, with dignity and respect at all times.
  • We will do everything we can to give you the best treatment.
  • We will understand your needs by listening, empathising with you, and keeping you informed.
  • We will make the place you are treated in clean, safe and caring.
  • We will give you information in a way you can understand, so you can make decisions about your care.

The scheme is now in its second stage, and the Patient Experience Team is working with individual wards and departments to further embed the initiative.

The Patient Experience Network National Awards ceremony will take place in March.
