Recognition for outstanding student nurses

Published 30/11/2016

Two promising student nurses have been recognised with an award created in memory of a popular nurse from the Royal Derby Hospital.

Olivia Copeland, from the University of Nottingham, and Hanna Bennett, from the University of Derby, received the Alison Statham Outstanding Student Nurse Award for their exceptional work with patients while they were completing placements at the hospital.

Judges said they demonstrated outstanding care, compassion and professionalism during placements at the Royal Derby Hospital.

This is the second year the award has been handed out. It was set up in memory of Alison Statham, a sister in the Maxillofacial department.

Chief Nurse Cathy Winfield said: “This award has created a lasting legacy for Alison. She was highly respected as a leader and a nurse by all the multi-professional team. She was very proud to be a nurse. This award represents Alison’s inspiration, drive and commitment; her compassionate care and courage. It’s fantastic to see these qualities embodied in so many of our young nurses today.”

The two nurses were chosen from 14 students nominated by staff.

Hanna Bennett was working on the Nightingale Macmillan Unit when she was nominated for the award. Judges said her care for patients at the end of their lives went far beyond what was expected so early in her career.

Hanna has now qualified as a nurse and is working in the Medical Assessment Unit. She said: “It was a huge surprise to learn I’d won, but I’m very proud. I didn’t think I was doing anything special – just doing my job. It’s great to know I’m on the right path.”

Olivia was on her first ever clinical placement when she was nominated for the award. She was put forward by a consultant who admired the way she developed a relationship with a young patient.

Olivia, who is now in the second year of her nursing degree, said: “I’m delighted to have won this award. I’m not doing this for recognition, but to get something like this is amazing. It’s helped me realise I’m doing something right.”
