Celebrating success at Trust's annual awards night

Published 28/09/2016

Outstanding staff from Derby Teaching Hospitals have been recognised in the Trust’s annual Celebrating Success Awards.

Teams from departments across the Royal Derby and London Road Community Hospitals came together at The Roundhouse, in Derby, to enjoy a glittering ceremony and find out the winners of the prestigious awards.

A total of 95 nominations were received for this year’s awards, and more than 1,600 staff cast their votes to decide who should win.

Seven awards were handed out at the event, which took place on Tuesday, 27 September. They were: Putting Patients First, Right First Time, Investing Our Resources Wisely, Developing Our People, Ensuring Value Through Partnerships, Employee of the Year and Team of the Year.

The winners were:

Putting Patients First: The Emergency Department and Ward 101, for their project ‘Priorities for the Dying Patient’. This initiative has seen patients at the end of their life moved to a separate area away from the busy A&E where their needs can be catered for.

Right First Time: The Insulin Safety Team, for their work to reduce insulin errors in the Trust.

Investing Our Resources Wisely: The Equipment Library, for a project to stock vending machines with items needed for resuscitation trollies around the Trust.

Developing Our People: The Advanced Clinical Practice scheme, for the impact it has made on developing careers and supporting improvements to patient care.

Ensuring Value from Partnerships: The Liaison Team, for integrating physical and mental health care through partnership working at the Royal Derby Hospital. The work of this team has brought about reductions in length of stay and supported a rapid response specialist service for adult patients.

The winner of the Employee of the Year award was selected from the Trust’s Pride of Derby award winners from the last 12 months.

Judges chose Lead Asthma Nurse Sonia Greenwood, for the exceptional care and compassion she shows her patients. They said Sonia went above and beyond her role to support patients, helping to reduce hospital admissions and improve their conditions.

The Team of the Year was chosen by Chief Executive Gavin Boyle and Chairman John Rivers. They refined 22 nominations to a shortlist of four, and then chose one overall winner. Centralised Outpatient Administration and Casenote Services was selected as the winner, and described by the judges as ‘the backbone of the Trust’.

Gavin Boyle, Chief Executive of Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I am impressed every day by the marvellous work of all our teams at the Royal Derby and London Road Community Hospitals.  These awards are a great chance to share their achievements with the wider world. There are some great things happening in our hospitals and it’s wonderful to have the chance to say ‘thank you’ and celebrate how their efforts and ingenuity are improving care for our patients.”
