Derby Hospitals Charity turns up the heat with new fundraising event

Published 15/08/2016

Thrill-seeking fundraisers are being invited to turn up the heat in the first ever Firewalk organised by Derby Hospitals Charity.

On Thursday, 13 October, a team of brave supporters will walk barefoot over a 12ft strip of burning wood embers which will expose their feet to heats of up to 315 degrees Celsius (600 degrees Fahrenheit)

Money raised through the event will go to the wards and departments at the Royal Derby Hospital and London Road Community Hospital. Fundraisers can choose where they would like their money to go.

The event has already piqued the interest of several hardy fundraisers.

Vicky Carey, of Spondon, is planning to take part in support of the Butterfly Fund for Dementia Patients. She said: “I’m really excited about taking part, if a little nervous, but I think it will be a really great experience.”

The Firewalk will take place at 7pm at the Hallmark Hotel in Derby. Spaces are limited, and entry costs £20 per person. Everyone taking part receives a medal when they reach the end of the walk.

Kerry Brady, Events and Community Fundraiser for the charity, said: “This will be a mental and physical challenge for everyone who takes part. I think it will be very empowering for everyone involved. It should be a great event.”

Derby Hospitals Charity supports all areas of work at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, providing funds for everything from vital new equipment to new toys for the Children’s Hospital.
