Demolition of former DRI begins

Published 22/01/2015

Demolition work has begun on the site of the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.

A contractor firm – Cawarden – has arrived on the London Road grounds and is working in tandem with an asbestos removal team.

Today (January 22) the first work began to remove the buildings, with a link corridor running between the DRI site and the London Road Community Hospital being dismantled by powerful machines.

The corridor is the last remaining link between the disused and the retained buildings and marks a final division of the two sites.

The demolition work is expected to take until around October to complete, with much of the initial work involving the reclamation of non-structural components like doors, windows and appliances.

The contractor has said that at least 90% of all materials on the site will be recycled.

A preferred developer has been chosen for purchase of the site and negotiations are at an early stage.
