Former hospital site to be transformed into a vibrant new community

Published 13/03/2013
Derby Hospitals has reached an agreement with UK Regeneration to sell eight acres of land on the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary site, which will be known as the Nightingale Quarter.

UK Regeneration is now preparing to submit a Planning Application for a new development which will consist of hundreds of new homes, retail and other amenities whilst still retaining important historical features of the site. This includes the Queen Victoria statue, the two pairs of towers on the London Road frontage and over 80 trees which are subject to preservation orders.

The sale of the remaining two areas of the site, which will include housing and a supermarket is progressing well and negotiations are continuing with interested parties.

The former hospital site is vacant following the move of the majority of acute health services to the new Royal Derby Hospital in May 2009.

Derrick Conway, project manager said: “This is a three year journey that started when the Trust submitted the planning application in 2010. I am pleased that with this agreement we will be able to turn what has been a good asset for the NHS serving the people of Derby into what we believe will become a thriving community that will continue to be an asset for Derby and avoid this important site, situated on two of the main gateways into the City Centre, becoming derelict and an unsightly burden.”

Sue James, chief executive of Derby Hospitals said: “We are delighted to have reached an agreement with UK Regeneration for the sale of the first phase of the site. We believe this phase will complement the overall redevelopment and regeneration of the former hospital site into a vibrant new community.  We are particularly pleased that the size and scale of UK Regeneration’s proposed scheme accords exactly with the commitments the Trust have given Derby City Council, over the re-use of this site.”

Income generated from the sale of the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary site will then be reinvested back into healthcare services at both the London Road Community Hospital and the Royal Derby Hospital.
