Mobile breast screening vans go to Long Eaton and Hilton

Published 11/02/2013

The mobile breast screening vans, operated by staff from Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, will be located at the Long Eaton Medical Centre, Long Eaton and the Wellbrook Medical Centre, Hilton from 4 February.

The mobile van makes it easier for women to attend, bringing the service to their doorstep. It will be at Long Eaton Medical Centre until approximately Friday 3 May and at the Wellbrook Medical Centre until 11 March.

Women aged between 50 and 70 years whose birthday falls between September and December will be invited. Anyone who is more than 70 years’ old who has not had a mammogram in the past three years can telephone for an appointment on 01332 785336.

Dr Anne Turnbull, consultant radiologist and director for breast screening at Derby Hospitals, said: “Nationally, it is estimated that screening can save around 1,400 lives every year as it can show changes in the breast up to two years before symptoms appear. Eighty per cent of breast cancer cases occur in women over 50 years-old and the risk ofbreast cancer increases as we get older. So if you receive that invitation, please attend for your appointment. It will only take 10 minutes and it may save your life.

“We are part of the National Breast Screening Programme, which provides free breast screening for all women in the UK aged between 50 and 70. An extension to the age range is currently being phased in which will include women from 47 to 73.”

Attendance is by invitation only, and full information is provided about what people can expect with the invite.
