Physiotherapists working in outpatients are trained to assess and treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.  They have specialist knowledge in the anatomy of the human body and how pain or injury in the musculoskeletal system may limit function.  They use this training to help rehabilitate an individual back to their fullest possible functional/activity levels.

 People are referred to this department by either their GP or Hospital Consultant for an expert opinion of their musculoskeletal problems.

 These may include;

  •  Joint pain –    peripheral e.g. shoulder, hip or knee

    spinal e.g. back or neck pain.
  • Soft tissue injuries e.g. sports or overuse injuries
  • Work related pain.
  • Degenerative problems such as arthritis

Your first appointment will involve a thorough assessment and may take up to an hour.  Your Physiotherapist will ask you a number of questions about how your problem affects you.   They will then examine the joint and muscle structures that may be contributing to your functional difficultly.

Following your assessment your physiotherapist will discuss and agree a plan of treatment with you.  Further appointments may be arranged which will last approximately 20-30 minutes.

Please wear loose fitting clothing for your treatment; or you may wish to bring shorts or a thin strapped top as appropriate dependent on the problematic area.
