Acute Stroke Unit

Ward 410 level 4 Royal Derby Hospital

About our service

Ward 410 is a 24 bedded unit providing complex assessment and treatment of acute stroke patients. Patients are typically transferred to ward 410 following diagnosis of a stroke either from accident and emergency, MAU or another ward. Stroke patients are also managed on other wards but will remain under the guidance of ward 410.

Assessment and rehabilitation is provided by the multi-disciplinary team including Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Dieticians. Staff may refer to other health professionals and specialities as indicated.

Here on ward 410 the staff are very experienced and well aware of the effects that a stroke may have on an individual and their families. During the admission to the ward our aim is to complete a full assessment of physical and cognitive function. Realistic treatment goals will be set together with you and your family if appropriate, in order to facilitate a safe discharge to either your home, an alternative residence or for further rehabilitation. These issues are discussed with you and your family during your stay on ward 410.

Following complex assessment and rehabilitation the multidisciplinary team will meet and decide on what further intervention is appropriate. If you are making good progress and are medically well enough you may be transferred to the stroke rehabilitation unit who are specialised in continuing your care through the stroke pathway.

The multi-disciplinary team have close connections with community services and the stroke support team. This allows us to provide a seamless service enabling you to continue with your recovery and address any problems that may arise when you are discharged from hospital.
