Diabetes Treatment

Where does insulin come from?

The pancreas of a person without diabetes will secrete a small amount of insulin all the time (basal secretion), with a larger amount being secreted when a person eats a meal (bolus secretion). The goal of insulin treatment is to copy this as closely as possible.

We know a lot more about diabetes now and how to treat it. In the past people had to use very big syringes, but now insulin pens are usually used which are a lot smaller and easier to use.

It is important that we decide on a “recipe” of insulin that suits you and your lifestyle. Everybody needs a slightly different recipe, and it will change as you grow. You should let us know if you don’t think that your type of insulin suits your lifestyle and we will try to find something that suits you better.
