Parkinson’s Society Awards

Decade of Difference - Dr Rob Skelly (Winner) 

One of the country’s leading experts in Parkinson’s disease has been named the top consultant in the Decade of Difference awards from the Parkinson’s Academy.

Dr Rob Skelly and his team at Derby Hospitals have spent the past decade developing some of the best services in the country for the care and treatment of patients with Parkinson’s.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Society Awards

Patients in focus - Rheumatology therapy team (Winner) 

Two physiotherapists from Derby Hospitals have triumphed in the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society’s (NRAS) Patients in Focus award. Sue Kennedy and Anne Hardy from the Royal Derby Hospital were presented with their award at the British Society for Rheumatology’s annual conference.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Healthcare Champion Awards

Health Champion  - Dr Chris Deighton and the Rheumatology team (Winner) 

Derby Hospitals’ rheumatology team was honoured in a special ceremony at the House of Commons. Dr Chris Deighton & his team were named Healthcare Champions by the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society.

Health Service Journal Efficiency Awards

Acute Sector Redesign - Teach-back + Changes Behaviour, Improves Care and Reduces Readmissions (Winner) 
Efficiency in Training & Development - Innovative streamlined learning opportunities release more time for nurses and medical staff to care for patients (Finalist) 
Efficiency in Pathology - Improving breast cancer treatment choices by streamlining results from 15 to 1.91 days (Finalist) 
Efficiency in Medical Technology - iQudos Clinical Decision Support and Service Maximises Both Clinician and Administrative Time providing High Standards, Low Cost and Patient Convenience (Finalist) 

A new programme which helps patients to stay well at home after leaving hospital has had a significant impact. Our Enhanced Discharge Project won first prize in the HSJ Efficiency Awards.

The scheme targets patients who are at greater risk of returning to hospital. Many of these patients have long-term conditions such as heart problems and lung conditions.

Our specialist nurses talk to patients about their condition and their medication needs before they leave hospital, teaching them how to manage their health once they get home.

Secondary Care Redesign - Teach-back + Changes Behaviour, Improves Experience and Care Reducing Readmissions (Finalist) 
Long Term Conditions - Pump partnership between health professionals, children and their families reduces hospital visits and improves diabetes self-care (Finalist)

The highlight of 2013 was winning the Department of Health’s inaugural award for compassionate patient care.

Safety in Diagnosis - Acute Kidney Injury E-Alerts (Highly commended) 
Safety in Medicines Management - Electronic Prescribing (Finalist) 

Derby Hospitals’ Renal Team was Highly Commended at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards for its pioneering work in setting up the UK’s first electronic monitoring system to identify patients with life threatening Acute Kidney Injury.

Health Service Journal Care Integration Awards

Diabetes Care - Intercare Health (Winner) 
Women’s Health - Pre conception care for women with diabetes (Highly commended)

 A pioneering venture that helps diabetes patients in Derby won the diabetes care award at the Patient Safety and Care Integration Awards.

 Intercare Health is a partnership between Derby Hospitals and the city’s GPs, which allows diabetic patients to see specialist doctors, nurses, dieticians and other support teams all under one roof, without the need for repeat hospital visits.

 It was also Highly Commended for its Proceed project, offering pre-conception advice for women with diabetes who are planning a pregnancy.

Partnership of the Year  - Derby Hospitals, in partnership with the School of Nursing at the University of Nottingham and University of Derby (Finalist) 

Derby Hospitals, in partnership with the School of Nursing at the University of Nottingham and University of Derby, has been shortlisted for a Student Nursing Times Award 2013 in the category ‘Partnership of the Year’.

Multiple Sclerosis Awards

Nurse of the Year  - Caroline Jordan (Winner) 

Our specialist multiple sclerosis nurse Caroline Jordan was honoured at the annual Multiple Sclerosis Awards, where she was named Nurse of the Year.

Our clinical pharmacist Sue Shaw was another winner during the year. She won the title Clinical Pharmacist of the Year for her work at Derby Hospitals.

Health Enterprise East Innovation Awards

Patient Safety - Derby Door (Winner) 

Our inflatable door innovation, which cuts the risk of infections spreading in our hospitals, won the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network Award for Patient Safety.

The Derby Door creates an inflated barrier which seals off ward bays to stop the spread of infection, helping to keep our patients safe.
