Special requirements for specimen collection
Bottles 1 & 3 submitted to Microbiology for cell count and culture If they patient is high risk, suspected TB or CJD INFORM MICROBIOLOGY by including information clearly on the request form.
Clinical notes
CSF will receive viral investigations and/or T.B. culture if indicated by cell count or by clinical information given. If investigation for subarachnoid haemorrhage is required please indicated this in the clinical information. All positive gram stains or elevated WBC are telephoned. Ensure that any HIGH RISK information is included on the request form, especially ?TB, BBV and CJD If ?CJD the ward must contact the Edinburgh CJD reference unit.
Turn around time
Negative results: 2 days. Positive results: 3 days (excludes samples sent to the reference lab)
