Special requirements for specimen collection
Samples should be taken at least 12 hours after event (e.g. onset of severe headache).  Sample number 4 (i.e. after CSF collected for protein and glucose) is required.  Protect from light and AVOID USE OF PNEUMATIC TUBE.  A simultaneous blood sample is also required for bilirubin and total protein.

Increased CSF bilirubin supports the occurrence of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) but is not specific for this.  CT scan is positive in up to 98% of patients with SAH presenting within 12 hours.
