Special requirements for specimen collection
Full tube required.  Sample must be taken anaerobically into labelled heparinised syringe, patients Hb and temperature are required.  Clotted or aerated samples are not analysed.

Facilities for blood gases are not available within the laboratory. Systems are located on critical care wards at both hospital sites.  If unsure whether sample is arterial, collect and send a clearly labelled venous sample in a heparinised syringe.
