Special requirements for specimen collection
Inform Laboratory and transport immediately on ice to laboratory to allow separation of plasma within 1 hour.
Reference Ranges
Up to and including 4 weeks of age, less than 100 �mol/L.Above 4 weeks of age and adults, less than 50 umol/L
Storage
Send directly to the laboratory. Delay can falsely increase ammonia level.

Clinical notes
Elevated levels are found in some inherited metabolic defects, acute hepatic necrosis and advanced portal cirrhosis. It is also elevated in Reye's syndrome. 
Sulfasalazine and Sulfapyridine may cause negative interference with this assay.
