Cellular Pathology

The Cellular pathology department is comprised of three services these are histology, cytology and the mortuary.

The histology and cytology laboratories are located on the fifth floor of the main hospital site of the Royal Derby Hospital. Please report to pathology reception when visiting the department.

The mortuary department is located on level zero of the main hospital site of the Royal Derby Hospital.

Opening hours

The laboratory service is available between 0845 and 1700 Monday to Friday.

Histopathology

The histopathology laboratory offers a histological and immunohistochemical diagnostic service for the Southern Derbyshire and East Staffordshire regions. Discussion and advice on clinico-pathological correlation and therapeutic implications is readily available to all medical staff, both in hospitals in the region and in general practice.

Cytology

The cytology laboratory carries out cervical liquid based cytology screening for the Southern Derbyshire and East Staffordshire regions. The laboratory has a computerised fail-safe mechanism to ensure follow-up of women with abnormal smears and facilitate three and five year recall.  Direct referral scheme operates with the colposcopy departments at the hospitals within these areas for patients requiring investigation. Non-cervical cytology includes CSF specimens, a wide range of fine needle aspirations, endoscopic brushings and other exfoliative cytology specimens received from clinical directorates and general practitioners.

The andrology laboratory is based within the fertility unit of Derby Hospitals NHS Trust and provides the andrology testing service for the unit. This includes semen analysis when investigating infertility such as counts, motility, morphology, sperm antibody testing and HOS testing and also post vasectomy testing.

Turnaround times

We endeavour to report cervical smears results within 14 days.

 Mortuary

 Provides storage facilities for deceased patients within the Trust and community

  • post mortem service for the Trust and HM coroner

  • out of hours on call service

  • viewing facilities for relatives of the deceased
    • teaching facilities for student doctors
    • transplant co -ordination

Mortuary opening times

The mortuary is open for the receipt and dispatch of bodies and the viewing of bodies by relatives and doctors: 0800 to 1630 Monday to Friday

Notification of death and post mortem requests

Requests for a post mortem examination must be accompanied by a completed post mortem request form, for both coroner and hospital cases. In addition, a consent form signed by an appropriate relative is required for all non-Coroner cases. The case notes and completed request and consent forms must be received in the Mortuary. Result enquiries should be made to the histology department at the Royal Derby Hospital.
