Brian Murfin

Thanks for saving my life after stroke

Brian Murfin, 62, from Ripley, says he owes his dramatic recovery from a stroke to life-saving treatment received at Derby Hospitals.

Brian was admitted to Derby Hospitals with symptoms of an acute stroke. Shopping in Derby’s Westfield centre at the time, he was rushed to A&E and then admitted to the stroke unit.

Thanks to the life-saving treatment he received, which involved giving him a clot-busting drug, doctors were able to reduce the impact of the potentially devastating condition and drastically improve his quality of life within just a few hours.

He said: “I am living testament to the staff’s professionalism and hard work. I honestly believe that if it wasn’t for the great care and rapid treatment that I was given that day I would now be living with a disability. I am so grateful to have these facilities in Derby. Without them I may not be here today.”

Tina Grist

Immaculately clean, organised and I didn’t feel like a number

Tina Grist, 37, is a mother-of-two from Burton. Her life was turned upside down last year after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Tina, who chose Derby Hospitals for treatment, talks about her first impressions of the new hospital and the care she received.

“Right from day one, when I first went to the Royal Derby Hospital, they were just so organised. I always felt that I was treated as an individual and not just a number. I have had experience of a lot of hospitals to compare to Derby and it is definitely at the top of my list with regards to the experience I had. I would choose to come here for future treatment if I ever needed it.

“The cleanliness of the place was unbelievable. The bathroom facilities were simply immaculate. I was on the gynaecology ward for five days and there was always someone cleaning – often the same lady. Even the visitors I had when I was in hospital commented on how organised things were. They said what a nice hospital it was. Information that was sent out with patient letters gave clear information about how to access the hospital and how to find the departments.”

Christine McGill

Pleased there was a choice of where to go for treatment

I am 62 years of age and travelled from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, to be treated at the Royal Derby Hospital. There has been such a bad press nationally, with reference to the treatment of older patients, that I thought I would make it known that some of the NHS hospitals have got it right.

“The care and consideration that has bee shown to me in the clinics I attended and also for the surgery I had was very welcoming.

“I for one appreciate the fact that we are now able to choose where to go for treatment.”

Patient from Derby

Care was second to none

I am pleased with the outcome of my cataract surgery which was recently carried out under the care of Mr Puri and his team.

The care I received in the department was second to none. The staff involved (waiting list staff, receptionists, nursing staff, anaesthetist, optician, theatre staff and surgical team) were all very professional and could not have done more to make my hospital experience better.

The staff are a credit to the hospital

I have recently spent a week in the Royal Derby Hospital and felt I must write with my comments.

First of all, if I had paid privately I would not have got better treatment.

Secondly, my thanks go to the staff on ward 402 including the nurses, tea ladies, cleaning staff (the ward was spotless) and last but not least the doctors who sorted me out when I came in feeling so ill. All the staff are a credit to the hospital including the volunteers who do a marvellous job.

Patient from Ashbourne

Admires the kindness and personal consideration given

I recently spent sometime in Accident & Emergency, the medical assessment unit and endoscopy unit and would like to express my appreciation and admiration for all the help I was given during these visits.

In each area I met with great professional expertise and also much kindness and personal consideration. This came from staff at every level including some delightful medical students and members of the volunteer service.

Unfailing pleasantness of staff and their efficiency. I commend the hospital and its staff and have written to the chief executive accordingly

Unlikely to visit you again as I was visiting the area, but I was most impressed.

My consultant was brilliant at listening and talking things through with me. The hospital rooms were clean and private, and I was made to feel comfortable. It is horrible being unwell, but my hospital does everything I ask of it to make me feel better. It’s a great service to our area.

On arrival at the hand clinic I felt apprehensive and nervous but was reassured by the nurses that all would be fine and it was.

At each stage I was informed of the procedure. The actual operation was somewhat uncomfortable but greatly helped by the nurse talking to me throughout the ten minutes it took. The surgeon was brilliant and did a wonderful job.

One week on, my hand has healed and I can now drive again.

I travelled a long way for this procedure and it was well worth it.
