Self-Administration of Medicines (SAM)

Derby Hospitals encourages patients to re-use their routine medicines and we will support you to take your own medicines whilst you are in hospital, rather than a nurse routinely giving them to you.  Where appropriate, we also encourage carers to participate and support this important task.

This is an opportunity to increase your knowledge about your medicines and how to take them, and will help you cope more easily with your medicines once you go home, especially if there is a change to your medicines.

We ask that you agree to take responsibility for storing your medicines safely and securely, in the bedside medicines locker, during admission.

Before your visit to the hospital you may wish to complete the Medicines Information card to detail which medicines and doses you take at what time.
