There is a designated bereavement service at the Royal Derby Hospital providing a sensitive, empathetic approach to the individual needs of relatives, at a time of loss.
Our publication ‘A practical guide about what to do when someone has died’ is available to relatives and provides useful and helpful information, at what is often a difficult and distressing time.
The Derby-Burton cancer network has produced a directory of bereavement support services which contains details of organisations and groups offering support, advice and counselling.
In most cases, we will be able to issue relatives with a medical certificate, indicating the cause of death, which should be collected from the bereavement service. To arrange collection, please telephone the bereavement service on the day following death or for deaths occurring during the weekend, please telephone on the next working day.
When we are unable to provide a medical certificate, the death will be referred to the Coroner and relatives should be advised to contact the Coroner’s office.
There is a registrar based at the Royal Derby Hospital from whom relatives can collect the medical certificate, any belongings and register the death all in one place. An appointment is required and can be arranged through the bereavement service. They will also be able to advise of any paperwork required for registration.
Alternatively, an appointment can be made at Derby Register Office.
