Enhanced recovery

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ER) was first developed over 16 years ago in Copenhagen by a surgeon named Henrik Kehlet.
Here in the UK we have been delivering Enhanced Recovery since 2000.
The Derby Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have developed pathways  which are currently implemented in the general surgical specialities of Colorectal, Upper GI and Urology.
The enhanced recovery programme is about improving patient outcomes and speeding up the recovery after surgery. The programme focuses on making sure that patients are active participants in their own recovery process.
