Simulation

Our current simulation facilities provide an excellent environment for all health care professionals to learn in a safe, effective way.

 

The Royal Derby Hospital Clinical Skills Department offers high-fidelity simulation training in our purpose-built Simulation Suite. Candidates are given the opportunity to undertake real-time training in an environment which can be adapted to suit the learner’s background.

Our simulation faculty deliver a wide variety of clinical scenarios on a range of levels designed to suit the needs of the candidates, from student nurses up to registrar level doctors.  Using sophisticated audio-visual equipment, candidates can view their colleagues in the Simulation Suite.  The observation rooms in which to watch the scenario have wide-screen display monitors and can be provided with flip charts and laptops if this is a requirement. There is no set limit to the amount of people acceptable for a simulation session.  Larger groups can be accommodated in our 60-seat lecture theatre, with smaller groups of up to 14 making use of one of our teaching rooms.

This is an opportunity to promote reflective practice through both self appraisal and peer evaluation, led by one of our medical facilitators. The facilitator takes notes during the scenario and uses these to provide individual and relevant feedback to candidates, including the patient assessment, clinical skills and team working ability.

The Royal Derby Hospital Clinical Skills Department offers a variety of adult simulation training, from low fidelity manikins, for example our basic life support models (Resusci-Anne) and ALS manikins, to our high fidelity manikin, Laerdal SimMan 3G.  We are one of the few hospitals in the UK to offer this new generation, fully transportable, wireless simulation trainer.

The main advantage this model offers is its portability, allowing us to deliver the training in the clinical area such as the Emergency Department, theatres or intensive care unit.  Scenarios can be made as realistic as possible, with learners encouraged to utilise their own resources in this instance to manage the scenario as they would any other patient.  Participants are encouraged to carry out examinations and observations in real time and to perform any relevant interventions, for example cannulation, catheterisation and 12-lead ECG monitoring.

We also have a purpose-built simulation suite where candidates have the opportunity to undertake patient assessment in a safe environment. This is especially beneficial for larger groups as colleagues are able to view the scenario on dedicated screens, allowing peer evaluation alongside facilitator feedback.

All candidates who participate in simulation training are given a constructive debriefing following their scenarios. This is an important element of the learning process, is facilitator-led according to client group, and incorporates feedback on clinical skills, scenario management and non-clinical skills such as communication and team working.

The Royal Derby Hospital Clinical Skills Department offers a variety of paediatric simulation training, from low fidelity manikins, for example our basic life support babies and juniors, to our high fidelity manikin, Simbaby®.

Simbaby® is a computerised manikin that can mimic physiological response to injury or illness, with parameters changing according to how the manikin is managed.  Simbaby® can be set up and used in our purpose-built simulation suite, or taken into the clinical area to deliver a realistic learning experience.

Candidates are encouraged to utilise their own skills and resources to manage the scenario, calling in members of the multidisciplinary team as appropriate. The Clinical Skills team set up the technical side of the simulation and help provide feedback on resuscitation skills. The running of the scenario is facilitated by a senior paediatric doctor, usually a consultant or senior registrar.
