Paediatric immediate life support (pILS)

Objectives

To provide the candidate with the knowledge and skills needed to recognise the seriously ill child and initiate appropriate interventions to prevent cardiorespiratory arrest; treat the child in respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest for the short time before the arrival of a resuscitation team; become members of the resuscitation team.

Target Group

        pILS is recommended for:

  • Registered nurses employed in ED (A&E)

  • Registered nurses employed in CED

  • Registered nurses employed in Dolphin PICU

  • All grades of medical staff employed in A&E

  • All grades of medical staff employed in anaesthetics

  • All grades of medical staff employed in children’s directorate

  • Children’s Directorate bleep holders

Duration

The pILS course is run over one day.

Assessment

Candidates are subject to continual assessment throughout the session.  The course is mainly delivered as hands-on practical skill stations and workshops and one lecture.  Successful completion of the session results in the candidate being issued with a certificate from the Resuscitation Council (UK).

Cost

This session is free to all staff employed by the Trust.  External candidates will incur a charge of £100.
