Basic Surgical Skills course

Objectives

To introduce surgical trainees to safe surgical practice within a controlled workshop environment and it aims to 'teach, assess and certify' the ability of trainees to use safe and sound surgical techniques that are common to all forms of surgery.

Accrediting Body

 This course was developed and quality assured by The Royal College of Surgeons of England, www.rcseng.ac.uk/courses

Target Group

Aimed at doctors who are preparing for the MRCS examination and course. Completion of an approved BSS course is recommended for trainees pursuing a career in Surgery. BSS should be undertaken during the first year of specialty training (ST1) although it is permissible that trainees in foundation years may take part.

Duration

The BSS course is run over 2 days.

The state-of-the-art training facilities at the Royal Derby Hospital have allowed us to become the first centre authorised to run this course over 2 days, rather than the standard 2½ days offered by other centres.

Assessment

Candidates are subject to continual assessment throughout the session. Successful completion of the course  results in the candidate being issued with a certificate from the Royal College of Surgeons.
