Advanced Trauma Life Support

Objectives

To understand the concept and principles of primary and secondary assessment; how to establish management priorities (triage); how to initiate primary and secondary management; demonstrate the skills necessary to assess and manage critically ill patients.

Accrediting Body

Exclusively provided in the UK by The Royal College of Surgeons of England, www.rcseng.ac.uk/courses

Target Group

Recommended for doctors in their first or second year of specialist training (CT1/ST1 and above).  Applications are accepted from FY2 doctors working in a relevant specialty.

Duration

The ATLS course is run over 3 consecutive days.

Assessment

Assessments are based on clinical scenarios that allow the candidate to demonstrate the core competencies that have been taught on the course.  ATLS is an interactive course combining lectures, workshops, skills stations and simulated patient management scenarios (moulages).  Candidates are also required to pass a pre- and post-course multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ).

Successful completion of the course results in the candidate being issued with a certificate from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Cost

Candidates are subject to a course fee of £550, which includes course materials and daytime catering.
