Advanced Life Support, Advanced Life Support (Recertification) & e-Advanced Life Support

Objectives

Advanced Life Support 2 day
The ALS course teaches the theory and practical skills to effectively treat cardiorespiratory arrest, peri-arrest situations and special circumstances, and to prepare senior members of a multidisciplinary team to treat the patient until transfer to a critical care area is possible.

ALS Recertification Course
Only those candidates who hold a valid ALS Provider certificate are eligible to attend the one day re-certification course. Certificates are valid for 4 years. It is not recommended that candidates attend a recertification course if more than one year has elapsed since the expiry date of their Provider certificate.

e-Advanced Life Support

Candidate eligibility is the same for e-ALS as the full 2 day course. The online component needs to be sucessfully completed prior to the 1 day face to face element. Certificates are valid for 4 years.

Candidates are given access to online resources from one month prior to the course. At their own pace they will then study approximately 7 hours of on-line course material before attending a 1-day face-to-face course. Access to the e-learning materials continues for a total of 5 months.

Target Group

The ALS provider course is designed for healthcare professionals who would be expected to apply the skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis.  Appropriate participants include doctors and nurses working in critical care areas (ED, CCU, ICU, HDU, theatres and medical admissions units), or on the resuscitation/medical emergency team and paramedics.

Duration

The ALS course is run over 2 consecutive days.
The ALS recertification and e-ALS are single days.

Assessment

Assessments are based on clinical scenarios that allow the candidate to demonstrate the core competencies that have been taught on the course.  These include airway management, initial assessment, resuscitation and cardiac arrest management (CASTest) and a multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ).

Successful candidates receive a Resuscitation Council (UK) ALS provider certificate, which is valid for 4 years.

Cost

The course fee for ALS is £400 and for ALS Re-cert and e-ALS is £300, which includes course materials and daytime catering.
