The Derbyshire Children’s Hospital, at the Royal Derby Hospital, aims to place children and families first. The children’s hospital was purpose built in 1996 to provide high quality care for children and young people.
The children’s out-patient department provides excellent care and expert management for all general paediatric medical and surgical conditions, as well as many specialist problems. In 2010, we saw over 60,000 children and young people in the department. As part of the Royal Derby Hospital our children’s services are rated excellent for quality of service (Healthcare Commission ratings 2009) and our high standards enable us to deliver quality patient care in clean and safe surroundings.
The children’s emergency department (accident and emergency) reviews over 25,000 children and young people per year. All patients are seen by trained paediatric staff in child-friendly surroundings.
Children requiring admission are cared for in a family-friendly environment, with parents welcome to stay.
- Puffin ward looks after children and teenagers with medical problems
- Sunflower ward is our surgical admissions unit
- Dolphin ward is our dedicated paediatric high dependency unit
All the wards are supported by play specialists and there is a hospital school during term times.
We have a dedicated paediatric team of therapists to support the care of children and young people. These include: physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, and clinical psychologists. We are proud of our KITE (Kids in their environment) team of community and specialist nurses, who provide outreach support to children with chronic conditions in their homes.
In 2010 a brand new ‘Teen Pride’ area was created in the children’s outpatient department. With support from Derby County Football Club this dedicated space for teenagers shows that we acknowledge the different needs of our patients, from babies to young adults.
The Derbyshire Children’s Hospital has a long history of excellence and we are proud to deliver this service to the children and young people of Derbyshire.
