Our hospitals and services

heart motif

Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for the:

Clinical excellence and compassionate care lie at the heart of the services we provide at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Our aim is to be a national beacon for all that is best in 21st century healthcare in the NHS.

We run two hospitals, serving a population of over 600,000 people in and around Southern Derbyshire. The Royal Derby Hospital, which incorporates the Derbyshire Children’s Hospital, is a busy acute teaching hospital. London Road is our Community Hospital.

Our services include a wide range of inpatient and outpatient surgical and medical specialities, intensive care, maternity services, children’s services and accident and emergency care. For some of our specialist services, such as vascular, cancer and stroke care, we attract patients from a wide catchment area.

  • The Royal Derby Hospital is the newest hospital in the East Midlands. It was officially opened by The Queen in April 2010 and it has the region’s only helipad.
  • We treat around a million patients a year and more than 6,000 babies are born in our maternity unit annually - an average of 17 births every day. More than 300 operations take place each day in our 36 modern operating theatres. Our busy emergency department sees around 370 patients each day.
  • We are proud of our teaching hospital status -The Royal Derby incorporates the Derby Graduate Entry Medical School and the School of Health Sciences. We work in partnership with the universities of Derby and Nottingham, educating and training future generations of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Our Values – Taking Pride in Caring

CARE principles of Compassion, a positive Attitude, Respect and Equality are at the very heart of the care we offer. These values motivate us to provide for the individual needs of our patients in a compassionate and professional manner, encourage us to create a positive workplace for our colleagues and push us to continue to deliver high quality healthcare.

Staff pride themselves on delivering high quality patient care. This has been consistently recognised year on year through the achievement of many national awards for patient care, safety and experience. The Care Quality Commission also rated the Trust as ‘Good’ overall in December 2014, and again when inspectors re-visited in August 2016. They highlighted the strong leadership, good team working and individualised patient care across our hospitals.
