Flying Squad

mr john collins

In the late 1950s, the Flying Squad was set up by Mr John Collins. It carried out some heroic rescues, attending to casualties at the scene of major accidents in the mines, in the potholes at Matlock and on the roads. Mr Collins was ably assisted by his registrar Keith LittleIf the Squad was called out to a serious accident they would take an anaesthetist with them. They also carried respirators and resuscitation equipment, plasma substitutes and electrolyte. The usual complement would be a consultant, nurses and an anaesthetist. What they did then as pioneers in Derby is now accepted as standard practice by ambulance services throughout the country.
