Mobile breast screening van goes to Belper Health Centre

 Tuesday 12 June 2012

The mobile breast screening van, operated by staff from Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, will be located at     Belper Health Centre, Babington Hospital, Belper, Derbyshire, from Monday 18 June.

The mobile van makes it easier for women to attend as the service is on their doorstep. It will be at the Health Centre until approximately Friday 27 July.

Women aged between 50 and 70 years whose birthday falls between January and April will be invited. Anyone over 70 years who has not had a mammogram in the past three years can telephone for an appointment on 01332 785336.

Barbara Young, Breast Unit service manager for Derby Hospitals, said: “Nationally, it is estimated that screening can save around 1,400 lives every year as it can show changes in the breast up to two years before symptoms appear. Eighty per cent of breast cancer cases occur in women over 50 years-old and the risk of breast cancer increases as we get older. So if you receive that invitation, please attend for your appointment. It will only take 10 minutes and it may save your life.

“We are part of the National Breast Screening Programme, which provides free breast screening for all women in the UK aged between 50 and 70. An extension to the age range is currently being phased in which will include women from 47 to 73.”

Attendance is by invitation only, and full information is provided about what people can expect with the invite.
