Derby Hospital’s rheumatology team win ‘Healthcare Champions’ award

The Royal Derby Hospital’s Rheumatology Team have been honoured in a special ceremony at the House of Commons.

Dr Chris Deighton and his team have been named Healthcare Champions by the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society. The Derby team was honoured at a special reception held last night in the Macmillan Room in the House of Commons, where their award was presented by the Home Secretary Theresa May.

The biennial Healthcare Champions Awards raise awareness of the chronic autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis. The Derby rheumatology team have been honoured for their professionalism and excellence of care, described by the nominee as ‘totally diligent and focused on helping me as an individual’. 

Members of the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society across the UK were asked to nominate their choices of healthcare professionals for the Awards. A special panel of judges then choose the winners.

“We’re absolutely delighted to win this prestigious award” said Kate Gadsby, rheumatology nurse specialist “Here at the Royal Derby Hospital we’re committed to delivering the best possible care for our patients living with rheumatoid arthritis. To be nominated for this Award directly by our patients means a great deal and we’re very proud of this achievement.”

Commenting on the Healthcare Champions Awards Ailsa Bosworth, Chief Executive of the Society said “Many congratulations to Derby Hospitals on winning this Award through your passion and commitment to providing such excellent care in rheumatoid arthritis. Once again I am enormously impressed by the dedication of our health professionals. I would like to thank all those who wrote in with their nominations and applaud all our winners for their professionalism and excellence of care.”
