Kidney patients to compete in British Transplant Games

A team of six patients who are cared for at the Royal Derby Hospital and who have all received life-saving kidney transplants through organ donation will travel to the British Transplant Games in Sheffield on Thursday 15 August, in the hope of returning with a clutch of medals.

The games have been staged in the UK for more than 25 years, and aim to promote the benefits of transplant surgery and encourage organ donation, as well as proving that there is life after transplant whilst increasing public awareness of the value of organ donation.

The team have been training for six months and will compete in a variety of events such as golf, lawn bowls, archery, 3K walk, mini marathon, football, tenpin bowling, table tennis, badminton and darts.

One member of the Royal Derby Hospital team is Vikkey Murphy from Derby who had a double transplant three years ago. Vikkey said: “I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 17 which gradually affected my kidneys. I was only on dialysis for three months when I got a call to say they had found a kidney and pancreas for me. It’s been three years now and how my life has changed. I now have the energy to chase after my four-year daughter and I have gone back to work. My whole family have been so supportive and they are all on the Organ Donor Register as they know how important organ donation is.”

Nurse consultant, Catherine Johnson who is the kidney transplant lead for the Royal Derby Hospital said: “Here in Derby we care for patients whilst they are waiting for a suitable kidney donor and we also look after them after they have had their transplant. It’s so important for people to sign the Organ Donor Register and, importantly, share their wishes with their loved ones. We have high hopes that our team will bring back a medal or two.”

The four-day event aims to raise awareness of the value of organ donation, and increase the numbers on the NHS Organ Donor Register.
