Derby Hospitals shortlisted for four top health awards

Staff at Derby Hospitals are celebrating after being shortlisted for four prestigious awards which recognise improvements in quality and efficiency in healthcare.

The shortlistings are for entries in the Health Services Journal’s Efficiency Awards.

· One of the shortlistings is for ‘Efficiency in Training and Development’. Nurses and doctors at the Royal Derby and London Road hospitals are using e-learning and one stop shops to undertake mandatory training, which releases more time for patient care
· Under the category ‘Efficiency in Acute Service Redesign’ Derby Hospitals has been shortlisted for the work it is doing to give patients and their families additional help and support before and after they leave hospital. Patients at high risk of readmission now benefit from a discharge support package. This gives them the confidence and independence to manage their condition at home and reduces unnecessary hospital readmissions
· In ‘Efficiency in Pathology Services’  Derby Hospitals’ pathology teams have improved breast cancer treatment choices by reducing the time it takes to obtain test results from 15 to only 1.91 days. This gives  patients more choice in their treatment options and the opportunity to participate in clinical trials which they would otherwise have missed out on
· Another shortlisting is in the ‘Efficiency in Medical Technology’ category. This recognises the innovative work of a company called iQudos, which Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has set up to develop and use clinical support software. This innovation helps doctors and nurses diagnose and manage long-term, age-related chronic diseases without patients needing to come into hospital

Derby Hospitals’ chief executive Sue James says “We are delighted that our innovative work has been recognised in this way. The Trust aims to be a beacon of all that is good in 21st century healthcare and these innovations, and the recognition they have received, underlines the progress we are making on this.”

The award winners will be announced at a ceremony in London in late September.
