Sue’s invitation to Buckingham Palace

Specialist midwife Sue Rucklidge who helps grieving families to cope after the death of a baby was invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her work.

Sue who is also a registered counsellor developed a telephone service and face-to-face sessions to help those whose baby has died before, during or just after birth.

Sue was attending the garden party today after being put forward for an invitation by the Department of Health. She has also been nominated for a Royal Derby Hospital Pride of Derby awards by Clare and Andrew Lewis, of Derby, who met her after the loss of their second baby last year.

Sue said: "I'm really honoured to be recognised with the invitation to Buckingham Palace. It's humbling because I work with such a big and great bereavement support team at the hospital. And I'm so touched by Clare and Andrew's nomination – it's lovely to know that I was able to help them during such a difficult time in their lives."

Clare, 41, suffered her first miscarriage in October 2011, the second in April last year and the third four months ago. She and Andrew, 39, said they would not have been able to cope with the third loss without Sue.

"She's been a friendly face to us, helped us to grieve and helped us to feel normal – explaining the different stages of anger, sadness and bitterness you go through and that other couples go through it too.

"Sue's given us hope for the future and we'd like to try again. She was our rock."

Andrew said: "It was important for us to do something nice and positive out of all of this, which is why we wanted to nominate Sue for an award."

The garden party is one of three hosted at Buckingham Palace each year – with a number of the guests attending, having been nominated for an invitation.

The Pride of Derby Awards celebrate the "inspirational work" of Derby hospitals' staff.
