An award created in memory of a popular nurse from the Royal Derby Hospital has been presented to two promising student nurses.

University students Ellie Rafton and Charlotte Woodman were presented with the Alison Statham Outstanding Nurse Award for providing exceptional patient care whilst on placement at the hospital.

The award was created by the Royal Derby Hospital’s Maxillofacial department, as a tribute to Alison Statham, who worked as a Sister on the unit, before tragically passing away in 2013.

Chief Nurse Cathy Winfield said: “Alison was highly respected as both a leader and a nurse by everyone in the multi-professional team. She loved her job and was very proud to be a nurse, so it’s fantastic that this annual award has helped create a lasting legacy in her name. Alison’s commitment to always provide quality, compassionate care for our patients helped set a fine example to all nurses and it’s great to see so many of our young nurses embody these qualities today.”

This is the third year the award has been handed out, with University of Derby student Ellie Rafton and Charlotte Woodman, from the University of Nottingham, both receiving their awards after being shortlisted by staff.

First year student Ellie, 22, was completing a placement in the Surgical Assessment Unit when she was nominated for “her kind and compassionate care” and for “going above and beyond for her experience”.

Ellie, from Lichfield, said: “I’m so honoured to have been presented with this award, and also shocked as I really was not expecting it. Winning the Alison Statham Outstanding Nurse Award has given me an extra boost of confidence and has helped light the fire in my belly to continue doing what I am doing.”

Charlotte was nominated by her colleagues after impressing during a Management placement on Ward 204 at the Royal Derby Hospital and has since taken up a position as a Registered Nurse.

She said: “I feel so proud to have been chosen as the winner of this award and all that it stands for. It’s a privilege to have had the education and reputation of studying at the University of Nottingham, and to have had my clinical placements at the Royal Derby Hospital. I’ve been fortunate to experience and learn from an exceptional standard of nursing practice and it’s such an honour to have been nominated for this award.”
