New mobile app connects GPs with hospital services

Published 10/05/2013

An innovative new mobile phone app has been developed by Derby Hospitals to help local GPs access information about hospital and community services.

The free app acts as a knowledge pool, pulling together key information to

help GPs get their patients to the right service or hospital consultant.

With many healthcare staff now using smartphones and tablets, the app provides them with quick and easily accessible information whether they are in their practices, whilst on home visits or out of hours.

Callum McClean, GP and Chair of Derby Advanced Commissioning Group said: “This new app is a fantastic tool for our GPs. We can very quickly find the right service or specialists to talk to and by having a direct dialogue we can agree the most appropriate care for our patients. We see hundreds of patients every week and anything that makes it quicker and easier to access the information we need is very welcome”.

Dianne Prescott, Director of Strategy and Partnership for Derby Hospitals said: “We believe we are the first acute Trust anywhere in the country to develop an app of this sort and we think the benefits can be far reaching. We hope this app will help us to build stronger relationships between hospital doctors, nurses, local GPs and our teams of community service staff.”

Feedback from GPs, practice managers and community teams has been very positive so we intend to continue developing the app to provide even more features which will improve patient access to hospital and community services.
