Top scores for Derby in National Cancer Patient Experience Survey

Derby Teaching Hospitals has received top marks from its cancer patients in a national survey focussing on quality of care.

Patients gave an average score of 8.8 when they were asked to rate the care they received in the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey– an improvement on last year and a better mark than the national average and regional scores. 

The survey also found that 95 per cent of patients knew who to contact if they were worried, and almost 90 per cent said they were always treated with dignity and respect.

The Trust’s scores were largely above the national average.

Denise Crouch, Lead Nurse for Cancer, said: “We’re delighted to see that our cancer patients are pleased with the high standard of care they have received from us. I’m particularly pleased that such a high number of people say they know who their nurse specialist is and how to contact them. We know there are always things we can improve on, and we are now forming an action plan to address some of the areas where we would have liked to perform better. These include working more closely with GPs and improving our appreciation of the role inpatient stays can have on our patients’ cancer journey.”

Teams in Derby are currently working on the Trust’s Cancer Strategy, which guides the development of services over the next five years, including increasing the focus on holistic care for cancer patients.
