Trust initiatives named as finalists in Patient Safety Awards

Three initiatives aimed at improving safety for patients at the Royal Derby Hospital have been selected as finalists in a national award scheme. 


One project to raise quality standards in A&E, another to improve the experience of patients receiving dialysis treatment and another to use barcodes to track products used during surgery have been shortlisted in the Patient Safety Awards 2017. 


Dr Nigel Sturrock, Executive Medical Director for Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It’s wonderful that these projects have been recognised in the Patient Safety Awards. We constantly strive to improve the quality of the services we offer to patients, and these initiatives are prime examples of the innovative approach taken by our staff to make sure that we deliver a good standard of care.”


Staff working in the Trust’s renal unit spent several years developing a tool to identify patients at risk of small but negative side-effects from their dialysis treatment, which has made a huge difference to those who dialyse several times a week. 


In the Emergency Department, work has been taking place to develop eight measurable indicators of care, which aim to ensure that all patients are seen in a timely fashion and have a positive experience, among other things. 


The Trust’s surgical teams have been working to improve traceability of products used during surgery. Using barcode technology theatre staff are able to track exactly which equipment has been used for each patient, thereby improving traceability and safety. 


The teams behind these projects will find out if they have been successful at an awards ceremony to be held in Manchester later in the summer.
