Update on planned collaboration between Derby Teaching Hospitals and Burton Hospitals

Over the last few months, work has continued in earnest to explore the benefits of a potential collaboration between Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

With a shared vision of delivering “outstanding” care to their local communities, this exploratory work has been led by senior clinicians at both Trusts, as they seek to identify collaborative solutions that will lead to the provision of improved, sustainable services locally, and that will consistently deliver a high quality of care.

This includes looking at:

•How Derby Teaching Hospitals can extend the reach of its specialist services across the broader population served by Burton Hospitals

•The ways in which Burton’s Queen’s Hospital can retain and improve its core services locally

•The type of services which are the most relevant for the communities served by the Burton Trust’s two community hospitals in Lichfield and Tamworth;

The work also includes looking at how both Trusts can optimise the essential administrative and back office functions that support the front-line care delivered, in line with national best practice on NHS efficiency models.

The benefits of this proposed collaboration include:

•Improved quality and clinical outcomes

•Delivery of specialist services locally

•A sustainable workforce to ensure best in class local care

•Optimised use of estate and facilities

•Financial efficiencies

The two Trusts are nearing the end of the first phase of exploratory work and in October, will be reviewing the work done to date and considering the development of more detailed plans and options.
