Hospitals awarded funding for art to help patient experience

The Arts Council and National Lottery have awarded Derby Hospitals £70,000 over the next three years to fund the Trust’s innovative Air arts programme.

The funding, which comes from the Arts Council and a National Lottery grant, will be used to help improve patient experience at the Royal Derby and London Road Hospitals.

“Each year more than 1.5 million people visit Derby’s two acute hospitals. These people are experiencing some of the most emotionally charged moments of their lives. Access to great art within the hospitals plays a crucial role in supporting people. Art can distract, it can sooth, it can cheer you up, whether it’s a beautiful piece of visual art, engaging words, a live performance or an opportunity to take part in a creative activity” says Air arts co-ordinator Juliet Cooper.

A wide range of art work is on display on each of the five floors at the Royal Derby Hospital. “Hospitals are often very stressful places to be admitted to, visit and work in.  Engaging with the arts in this environment offers opportunities for unique creative solutions and supports artist development through challenging live briefs and access to a large and diverse audience” adds Juliet Cooper.

A diverse mix of artists are involved in the arts programme. “It has been a great pleasure and a privilege to work for ‘Air Arts’ at the Royal Derby Hospital, their work brings a little light relief into an environment that can be so laden with worry and stress for patients” says musician Lester Simpson. “Whether on the wards or in the entrance areas, the response from the public is always very positive and the feedback is complimentary. I count myself lucky to have been part of what I trust will be a continuing project, it really is money well spent.”
