Two more national awards for Royal Derby’s A&E team

A new scheme to train more A&E doctors and nurses, which has been developed by clinical teams working in A&E at the Royal Derby Hospital, has won two prestigious national awards.

The pioneering work undertaken in Derby won two awards at the HSJ Value in Healthcare Awards, for ‘Training and Development’ and ‘Workforce Efficiency’.  The Derby team were presented with their awards at a ceremony in London on Tuesday night.

The winning project is encouraging more clinical staff to come and work in the city’s A&E department. The scheme, which focuses on providing attractive career paths and innovative training for emergency staff, is now being rolled out nationally.

“I am delighted that the work our clinical teams have done, to create new training opportunities for A&E staff, has won this important national recognition” says Derby Teaching Hospitals Chief Executive Sue James: “This work is attracting attention from all parts of the country as other hospitals want to see what we’ve done here in Derby to attract more doctors who want to work in our A&E department, bucking the national trend, and in turn helping us to provide the best care for our patients”.

The judges praised the Derby scheme: “This project demonstrated excellent leadership and the desire the team demonstrated to share this nationally was impressive.”

They added: “The project is a strong example of adopting an innovative new approach based on service demand. It demonstrates the value of stabilising a workforce and commitment to skills investment.”

The changes introduced at the Royal Derby Hospital as a result of this award-winning scheme have increased the number of clinical staff working in A&E. In turn this has improved A&E performance, with the Trust meeting the four hour target in every quarter of 2014-15.
