Derby Hospitals nominated for travel award

Published 19/03/2015

Derby Hospitals has been shortlisted for an award recognising environmentally friendly workplaces.

The Trust has been nominated at this year’s NHS Sustainability Awards, which showcase health organisations striving to implement ideas which make them more energy-efficient and reduce their carbon footprint.

The Trust’s nomination is in the transport category, for its approach to encouraging use of sustainable travel, urging staff and visitors to car-share and cycle.

A staff travel survey carried out in 2014 showed the Trust has reduced numbers of single-occupancy vehicles by 6% and seen increases in staff walking, cycling and using public transport.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on April 16.

It is not the first time Derby Hospitals has been recognised for its efforts to promote sustainability. Earlier this month, Andrea Shaw, the Trust’s Transport and Sustainability Officer won Travel Champion at the 2015 Connected Derby awards, having last year won Last Employment Site of the Year in the same ceremony.

Paul Brooks, Associate director of Patient Experience and Facilities for Derby Hospitals, said: “This is a great achievement for us. We are committed to making sure we reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable transport and we have worked hard to encourage this across our staff and in our visitors.”
