Members of the public asked to become hospital governors

Published 15/04/2013

Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for local people to become hospital governors.

This year there are vacancies in Derby City, Erewash, and North West Leicestershire and East Staffordshire. Anyone who comes under these local councils may apply.

Public governors work together with staff governors to ensure that the views of NHS Foundation Trust members, and the wider community are represented at the highest level of the Trust.

The roles provide fantastic opportunities for members of the public to become more involved in the services provided at the Royal Derby Hospital and the London Road Community Hospital. Nomination forms are available from 24 April and the closing date is 10 May 2013.

The Council of Governors are involved in determining the future plans of the Trust. They can hold the Board of Directors to account for their actions and select and appoint the Chairman and Non-Executive Directors.

Successful candidates will be expected to attend the Council of Governors meetings and informal workshops. They can also join a range of hospital groups which will give them an insight into the patient experience and the hospital services. Governors can also get involved in hospital inspection tours as well as promoting Trust membership through recruitment activities.

Assistant trust secretary Justine Fitzjohn said: “To be given the opportunity of representing the wider community’s views and opinions about the hospitals is a very strong way of having direct influence on the direction of local health services. It’s a chance to take a front seat within the Trust and help shape healthcare here in Derby.”

An information pack is available by calling 01332 786896. It is also online in the members’ section of the Trust’s website at www.derbyhospitals.nhs.uk.
